Okanagan Falls Community Church

A Brief HistoryBeginnings are so vital, because in many ways they set the ongoing genetic code of the church. OKFCC was planted for the best of reasons – to spread the gospel. At the very first exploratory meeting called by Pastor Sid Waterman on January 28, 1979, Fred King, who later became the MP of this area, spoke for many in that room of fourteen believers, when he responded to a question. He was asked how his congregation, Kaleden Baptist Church, would respond to having another church start just miles away from theirs. He said that they would welcome such a plant for two reasons. 1) Because the gospel was being spread to another community, and 2) They looked forward to the Christian fellowship they would experience with that new church. And so, later that spring, the charter members of that new church called Pastor Dan Watts and his wife Sharon to come to OK Falls for that purpose. Pastor Dan led his first service on June 10th in the OK Falls School gym. Many baptisms soon took place in Skaha Lake. As Pastor Dan told the local newspaper, “the person being baptized is declaring to the world that they have turned their backs on sin…and that through Christ’s life in them they will live a new life in ‘victory over sin’.” And in the years since then, that mandate to spread the gospel has been at the heart of this church.God richly blessed this new work. On March 14, 1981 this community broke ground for the building that has housed this vision ever since. The building was completed and dedicated on November 15th of that years. Rev. Watts served this community until 1984, followed by many other faithful servants including pastors Ron Schindel, Gary Lawrence, Ted Searle, Dave Kelly, Ron Crooker, and Wade Harvey. Pastor Jon Manlove is our present pastor. But this church has been built on far more than its pastoral leadership. As Baptists, one of our core convictions is the priesthood of all believers. And over the years, it has been ordinary Christians, using the gifts the Spirit has given, to contribute together in the building up of this work. All, for praise of His glory! (see Ephesians 1:12)

Okanagan Falls United Church - The “Blasted Church”

Services and LocationOkanagan Falls United Church services are being held at 9 AM every Sunday morning at 1108 Willow Street in Okanagan Falls.Discover:a sense of church family, through fellowship and working together.a spiritual place, away from the turmoil of getting and spending.a faith community at worship.a place of empowerment, and service to the local and wider communitythe reassurance that there is somone to help you in the crisis moments of life. Our History (The Blasted Church)The Okanagan Falls United Church began its life as a Presbyterian Church in the mining community of Fairview. When the town’s fortunes declined, the church was not being used. The Okanagan Falls congregation and their minister decided in 1929 to dismantle the church and bring it to their community. It is the “dismantling” part of the church lore that is shared as a great story, and that named a winery. The practice in those days was to board over the windows and seal the doors of a building in which a stick of dynamite was suspended. The resulting force loosened all the nails so that removal of the boards was accomplished more easily and with less damage to the wood. The material was then brought to Okanagan Falls, reassembled, and the church was reopened with a dedication service on January 19, 1930, with Reverend Feir officiating. It was an interdenominational church for several years. Many of the furnishings and stained glass windows are dedicated from and to the pioneers of the area. The pews (see picture) were originally made circa 1902 for use in Elliott’s Hall in Fairview, and were in place for the visit of the poet Pauline Johnson. They were sawed by hand, the bench from one solid piece of lumber, and the backs of two pieces. When Elliott’s Hall closed, the pews were given to the church in Fairview, and subsequently came to Okanagan Falls. They are still in use. This lovely old country church at the corner of Willow Street and 11th Avenue has served its communities well in the past, and continues to do so today. Please come and participate with the congregation in the continuing adventure and evolution of the “blasted church.”

Belich's Foods and Deli

Family Owned and Operated For Three GenerationsThe Belich family has been in the grocery business for three generations, and that tradition has found a new home in Okanagan Falls. Belich’s AG Foods is owned and operated by the father and son team of Mike and Kyle Belich, second- and third-generation grocers who watched how the rest of the family treated and provided for their customers over the years. Mike and Kyle have brought those same values to Belich’s AG Foods, where customer service is priority No. 1.The store is a one-stop shop that offers everything you and your family needs, from the freshest produce to the finest cuts of meat to all the necessary staples. And if they don’t have what you need, they will get it. It’s the way Marino Belich, known to many as “the candy man,” did business in North Vancouver when he owned and operated his grocery store in Edgemont Village, and it’s how his descendants do it today at Belich’s AG Foods in Okanagan Falls. They are part of the community, and they are here to fulfill all of your grocery needs.
